We will use a technique I used to love when I was a kid involving bright colors overlaid with black crayon, after which the design is scratched off--Fun!

Week 8: "Fabric" Dying

The dying of fabric is an ancient art of India. After a short discussion of that art, we will do our own dying, by using markers and wet wipes and rubber bands. We will then incorporate the dyed "fabric" into a bookmark design.

Week 6: Creating Masks

Since it is Halloween, we will decorate, and cut out some pre-printed (or create our own) masks. There will be animals, Kathakali style, Indian lady or guy, animals, butterflies... It will be fun to see how the creations look in the end!

Week 5: Rangoli

Activities and lesson notes:
After a short discussion
- of the traditional art of rangoli in India (when, where and by whom—and have they ever seen it or know someone who does it?)
- asking to keep the artwork to display at the 10/24 Diwali celebration (no class next week)
- reminding to handle chalk carefully or it will break and to work left to right and top to bottom so as not to smudge (reverse for lefties)...

We will create our own rangoli, in a slightly non-traditional way. We'll use pressed chalk sticks and black construction paper for our designs, and map them out before hand with pencil on paper with a grid of dots.

Week 1 Self-Portrait Mural

Activities and lesson notes:
1. Introductions--Teacher and background in art
Students and their favorite way to express creatively
2. Brainstorm--Art, where do we find it? US? India?
3. Using pencils, create outline of students on mural.
4. Ask students to use markers to draw on clothes, jewelry, face, etc--to tell the story of who they are, what they like, and so on.
5. In closing minutes of class, discuss what they created, and ask them to place a star on the area of India where they have family.
